Russia’s Regions on their Way to Europe
Funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, 2003 – 2005, Contact Person: Dr. Galina Michaleva
Research Question
This research project examined to what extent Russia’s way to Europe depends on its regions and what consequences this may have. Never losing sight of the politics pursued in Moscow, it took a close look at the European interests of the respective regions and provided insightful answers to the complex question what opportunities and obstacles Russia faces whilst integrating into Europe. More specifically, comparative analysis of the different regions provided a differentiated insight into the ‘Foundations and Prerequisites of an Enlarged Europe’. In this context, both competitive and collaborative approaches were explored in some detail.
Cooperation
The project was carried out in close cooperation with the Centre for Modern Politics Research (Moscow) and the Russian State University for the Humanities (Moscow). The research on the Russian side was coordinated by Sergej Ryenkov, lecturer at the Russian State University for the Humanities and deputy director of the Centre for Modern Politics Research.
