Samizdat and other Periodicals
The Former USSR
The Special Periodicals Collection from the countries of the former USSR contains over 6,000 titles from the end of the 19th century onwards. These include officially published periodicals as well as the publications of marginalised social, political and cultural groups and organisations. These range from newspapers, journals and bulletins to academic works and other series publications. Their subjects cover the humanities and social sciences, politics and economics, culture and cultural studies. The collection concentrates on nationwide publications from Moscow. In addition, there are regional periodicals (from Ekaterinburg and Kazan', and , for the 1990s, St Petersburg, Saratov, Samara, Vladivostok, Tver', Smolensk and Tambov) and roughly 200 subscriptions to periodicals from the current year.
The samizdat periodicals from the 1950s to 1986 (over 40 titles) and the unofficial periodicals of 1987-1991 (over 800 titles) are housed in the Historical Archive. The publications of the political emigration from Russia and the Soviet Union extend beyond these chronological parameters and are available from as early as the 19th and early 20th centuries.
